Living in coastal California, we can all agree that property is on the pricier side these days, which is why most people are turning their yards into an outdoor living oasis where they can entertain more family and friends, enjoy a larger open area, or just relax and connect with nature.

With that smart trend in mind, today, I am sharing my step-by-step guide for designing a perfect outdoor living space that speaks to you and your guests! Let’s get started…

Step 1: Carefully & Creatively Consider the Space’s Use

How do you see your outdoor space? What will you be using your space for? Morning coffee? Entertaining family? Maybe just reading a book, meditating, or daily reflecting?

Before you begin the process of designing, I invite you to use your imagination and dream about what you would really enjoy using this space for now and in the future.

Step 2: Add Lovely Layering, Starting at Ground Level

Your outdoor living space is not so different from your indoor space…the same rules apply!  Start with layering your room or space from the ground up. First add an outdoor rug, then furniture, fabrics, and finally, accessories!

Your outdoor rug should be both beautiful and easily cleaned, since it will not only see lots of foot traffic, but will also need to endure whatever the weather throws its way.

Step 3: Opt for Life-Proof, Long-Lasting Outdoor Furniture

The main difference to acknowledge with outdoor living spaces is the wear and tear of furniture and materials that you do not get indoors.

Make sure that even if you have a California Room or roof over your outdoor living space, that you are utilizing the proper materials. Outdoor furniture is designed to last longer in these environments. Try sticking with materials such as aluminum, jute, steel, and woods like teak and cypress.

Step 4: Choose Cozy Textiles for Quality and Comfort

Fabrics and textiles are so important when creating a space that feels comfortable and inviting. I encourage you to use outdoor cushions, pillows, rugs, and even outdoor blankets to cozy up in your space. Don't forget to mix and match those textures and colors!

Need something custom for your space? Blush works with many window treatment vendors and workrooms to create custom pieces that are designed to fit your particular spaces…whether indoor or outdoor!

Step 5: Finish Up with Fabulous & Functional Final Touches

Don't forget those final finishing touches that are sure to make your outdoor living space feel like part of your home!

Try adding some fresh cut flowers from your garden in a lovely vase. Outdoor art sculpture pieces are becoming popular in more residential spaces.

And last, but certainly not least, don't forget a bar cart to hold drinks and snacks so that you and your guests can sit back and enjoy!
