How to Uncover Your Interior Design Style (& Why it Matters)

The interior of your home is a reflection of who you are. It presents your likes, dislikes, personal taste, and family memories.

Do you know what your design style is? When working with new clients, I've noticed that the typical response is "No!" If you feel the same way, I’m taking you through the introduction phase I use to get to know my clients better. This phase is all about uncovering your design style. Take a look…

Step 1: Find Visual Inspiration on Pinterest

If you haven't had the chance to explore Pinterest, now is the time! Pinterest is a great resource to help discover your design style and communicate your likes and dislikes.

First, start a board called "My Design Style (room name).” I’d suggest starting with one type of room (i.e., kitchen, bath, living room, bedroom). Then research common design styles. For example, you can use style words like modern, contemporary, transitional, eclectic, modern farmhouse, and industrial to see what photos pop up for the specific room you are looking for.

Add 10 photos of spaces you like, and don't forget to detail what you like about each image, as some items might fall into a different category.

Step 2: Determine the Similarities Between Images

Once you have compiled your collection of photos, find the common threads between each of the pictures. For example, is there a gorgeous rug in every space? Dramatic drapery, moody hues, or modern furniture?

If you are working with a designer, they can walk through this process and use their expert eye to find these for you.

Step 3: Narrow Themes & Styles with a Concept Board

Now it's time to narrow down the design details you love and create a design concept for each space you have in mind. When I work through this process with my clients, I create a list of all the favorite elements (colors, scale, patterns, light, textures, and style) to fine-tune the perfect design and make furniture selections!

My advice? Take some time to discover what you like and don't like. Don't waste money buying things that don't flow and look hodge-podgy (that is definitely a word, btw). It will make a huge difference when the actual design gets underway.

You will feel amazing when you better understand your style and create a space that reflects who you really are!
